Chapter 18 - Dre

Dre lay on the ground. Pressure held him there. It was like every muscle and bone was shackled. Black energy churned above. He clenched and unclenched his hand, creating a sphere and a point of pressure on his body. He repeated it until seven balls floated above him. He still couldn’t go past that amount of dark energy without it hurting. If he wanted to test his energy limits, he still needed his brother to summon light energy.

Alaan stood only a few paces away, brow set low in pointless concentration. Three small balls of dark energy were under his control and ten blobs of light circled above his palms. He only moved one type of energy at a time because having more power didn’t translate to suddenly being magically ambidextrous. There were still too many skills he didn’t have and didn’t need to have because Dre had them. Eventually, he would snap out of this phase. Dre picked seven spots on the ceiling and hit every one of them.

He closed his eyes and MMA flashcards sprung into his mind. He skimmed over texts on weight distribution patterns, topology, and crystallography. One book was titled “Theoretical Approaches to Wizardry Energy: Breaking the Dichotomy.” He pushed it aside. He grabbed a random moving image titled “Hallow Shapes and Hidden Energy.” A woman solidified a dark cloud into a large sphere. She fired it. A wall of light appeared in its path and she snapped. The sphere faded away, revealing a smaller cloud of energy inside. She created a new sphere from that, fired the energy above the wall, released it, revealed that it was hollow too, then fired the last of the energy at a target behind the wall. This was different. There was an element of deception that wasn’t common in dark energy. It was a sloppy condensing. Instead of pulling all of the energy tightly together, some of it was left unmanaged.

Dre reached out his senses. Wizardry pushed and pulled on his skin. He pulled out a slow stream of energy, mostly for effect. A black line of smoke danced above his head, spreading an even pressure across his body. He watched the flashcard one more time, then clenched his fist. Half of the cloud jerked down as a black sphere formed above his hand and the pressure on the upper half of his body concentrated to a single point. The remaining free energy stayed above him and its pressure redistributed across his body.

Dre sucked his teeth. The shape didn’t work. It was still solid. The point of pressure on his palm was proof. He snapped away the energy. This time, he took a moment to visualize a hollow sphere. It was the root of condensing energy after all. If he couldn’t visualize the structure, he couldn’t create it. Instead of thinking about the outside of the shape, he imagined the inside. Curved walls surrounded him in all directions. It was a new angle, a new reference point for a shape.
